Indeed, at a time when interaction between Maldivians and Malaysians are at an all-time high, and at this age of Internet and Satellite TV, Maldivian women can’t be ignorant of the existence of loose clothes that cover their curves. Burka is not a part of Maldivian attire, despite the country practicing Islam since 1153 AD. The flood of Burka is a recent phenomenon. Many women who wear the burka do so because of pressure from their husbands, parents, boyfriends, and friends. Peer pressure from office-mates and friends isolate those who do not wear Burka. It is such pressure that makes them wear Burka; not a deep religious belief. Thus they wear the cat suits as a compromise, to cater to their need to appear sexy.

It is paradoxical, but these women seems to have learned a fine art of bowing to social pressure and still keeping the type of clothes they like to wear. I will not make a moral judgment of whether it is right or wrong. Rather, I find the irony in the fact that the husbands, boyfriends, parents and friends of those women find it quite comfortable with them wearing Burka with the catsuits. This further reinforces my belief that these men put pressure on the women, not based on any religious beliefs, but because of peer pressure on them as well. A man puts pressure on his wife to wear Burka, because the society puts pressure on him and sidelines him. If they are for the people who wear Burka in an earnest belief to cover themselves and wear ‘modest clothing’, then these styles can be of help. But such people are already wearing such clothes.

Making money on Amazon Marketplace can be tricky sometmes. Especially when you find that the book you want to sell has competition from hordes of people who are selling theirs for a penny a book. Read on to find out what’s going on and what to do about it.

I bet that your first thought when you see those penny listings by other Amazon Marketplace sellers is probably that you can’t possibly compete with that. And you’re right. You can’t compete, nor should you. Not unless you’re prepared to work for pennies or at least far less than minimum wage.

So why are some people selling books so cheaply? Is this any way to run a business? Do they know something you don’t about making money on Amazon Marketplace?

Like offline stores that advertise certain things at ridiculous prices to get you into the store, some Amazon Marketplace Sellers use those penny listings to build up their visibility and their sales. They also hope that once you’ve bought a few things from them, you’ll recognize their names and will be back for more.

Remember when eBay was awash in penny listings for virtual products? Of course with virtual products, there’s no work involved. Everything is automated, and since eBay’s commission was a percentage of the take, that worked out nicely for the sellers.

Making money on Amazon that way will mean putting in a whole lot of sweat equity for peanuts — especially if you go that route.

So what should you do about the penny sellers? Should you try to compete with them?

You really can’t. There’s no way to compete on price, not when the price is a penny. Instead, focus on selling books that are more valuable and that don’t have penny competition.

Instead, I would recommend that you decide on a price point. Take the price of the book and deduct the commission. Then add the allowance for shipping and figure out how much you actually pay for shipping. The result will be your net profit. If you do that, you’ll find selling books and making money on Amazon a lot more rewarding.

Now all you have to do is decide on how much of a net profit you want to earn per book at a minimum. Then focus on listing books on Amazon Marketplace that will pay that much — or more.

In today’s fast paced global market, you cannot afford to sit on the sidelines and waste time chasing shiny things, so it is imperative that you place a maximum time limit that you will devote to the exploration of an idea. This is especially important if you are a start up entrepreneur who has not yet opened a business.

The second way to keep yourself focused and to stop chasing shiny things is to develop a standard vetting process for all of your ideas. Using this process, you ask key questions to determine if you should move forward on the idea. The following are the 5 key questions to ask of any business idea to determine if it is worth pursuing.

1) Does the opportunity fit my skills and experiences? If I am a restaurateur, opening a used car lot to take advantage of the growing demand for used cars may be a good idea, but is not a good fit for core skills and competencies.

2) Is the opportunity a business or a job? Many ideas are great for a one man show but cannot be expanded into a large scale business. If you open one franchise, you have a job, if you become a master franchisor and open multiple stores, you have a business.

3) Does the opportunity have large market appeal? Is the sales potential large enough to sustain the growth and revenues necessary to make this a lucrative business? What is the size of my market, how many people will buy from me and why?

4) Does the opportunity have a residual income component? I have a friend who sells custom outdoor kitchens, it is a great and lucrative business, but he is constantly hunting for elephants. Is this a business that requires elephant hunting or one where once you bag the elephant, he will continue to buy over and over and over.

5) What is the execution timeframe? How quickly you can put all the pieces together and bring the opportunity to market and begin generating revenue.

Over the years, these questions have helped to separate the “nice to do” ideas from the “need to do” ideas and to spend my time most effectively. The combination of setting clear goals based on predetermined time frames and a minimum standard vetting process has helped me stay on track and can also do the same for you. Best of luck!
